Green Councillors respond to call for food bank donations

During this period of lockdown, food bank donations have decreased while demand for donations has reached record levels. Throughout this time of hardship more and more people have found themselves relying on food banks to support themselves and their families, but as money gets tighter, fewer people have been able to do donate resulting in a crisis at food banks.

Green councillors Sue Sinden (Redhill East) and Ruth Ritter (Earslwood and Whitebushes) have stepped up with others to support Reigate and Banstead’s call for donations to the central food bank at The Harlequin. By setting up collection boxes in their gardens, it allowed people who were less mobile/higher risk to donate without having to travel into Redhill town centre.

Ruth says, “Local people are being so generous – as soon as the box has been emptied by the council, it starts filling up again. These donations make a huge difference to vulnerable people. There are still many people in Earlswood & Whitebushes who have to self-isolate while lockdown restrictions begin to be lifted. If you know anyone who needs support, please put them in contact with us .”

Green councillors have asked the council to call on the government to provide a Coronavirus Emergency Income Support Scheme so that all the households who have been pushed into relying on foodbanks get back the dignity of being able to afford to meet their own needs.

If you want to contribute, find your local food bank and pick what you can from the list below. If you can’t get to your local collection centre contact your councillor and they will direct you on how to proceed.
