The State of Hunger

Cllr Ruth Ritter writes:

It is with tremendous sadness and anger that I have read today the Trussell Trust’s State of Hunger report which outlines their research on the use of food banks in the UK.

This report makes clear that the 73% increase in food bank use over the last 5 years is unacceptable. It has a direct relationship to problems with the benefits system, with two thirds of people reporting that this is why they have needed to access a food bank. Other reasons reported are health issues and housing costs that take most of a household’s income, leaving less than £50 a week for everything else.

Here in Reigate and Banstead there is a similar upward trend, with local food charity Loveworks reporting at their AGM on 13th November that they have seen a 39% increase in food bank use in the past year.

This research is a clear call to action. It shows clearly what the government needs to do to help create change, and reveals the true extent of the problem.

Please do read and respond.
