Call for investment in Stoats Nest

I am writing this on a train and I’ve just written to Crispin Blunt MP and Vic Broad, Leader of Reigate and Banstead Borough Council.

I emailed them as I left Redhill on my way to Victoria. Unfortunately there is no longer a fast train service to Victoria from Redhill, it was removed as part of the improvements introduced this year.

Residents have already complained to me about this. Many of us wrote to the rail companies when the new timetable was proposed last year, and I know that the local rail user association made a strong case. However, this was to no avail.

Steve Triggs, Chair of the Reigate, Redhill and District Rail Users Association (RRDRUA) has told me the problem can only really be overcome by strategic investment in Stoats Nest (a junction near Coulsdon), to enable Redhill to be on the fast line to Victoria, not the slow line as it is now.

I wrote asking Crispin Blunt and Vic Broad if they would lobby the Department of Transport and make the case for strategic investment in Stoats Nest in the next Network Rail investment period.

The fast connection to London is important to our Borough, and to Surrey. It’s not just relevant to those of us in Redhill and Reigate – Redhill is an important interchange to the North Downs Line (which will now have more frequent trains) as well as to Tonbridge. Investing in Stoats Nest would appear to be strategic in the interests of Redhill, Reigate and Banstead Borough, and Surrey as a whole.

I have offered to meet Mr Blunt and Mr Broad to help with this.
