Steve McKenna is standing for election as Councillor in Redhill East on 5 May 2016. [Read about our other candidates here]
Steve is a Chartered Surveyor and Town Planner. He has 30 years’ experience working for public and private sector organisations, and has managed many major urban regeneration programmes. He currently works for a charity that acquires and manages open spaces for public benefit.
As a member of the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors’ (RICS) World Environment and Resources Board, Steve has worked on RICS’ responses to Government policy initiatives including leading RICS’ work on issues concerning the extraction and use of rare earth metals.
Steve says, “I want to represent Redhill East to help protect and enhance the character of our town and green spaces, and to represent all residents.
“The Council’s Local Plan allows up to 1,400 homes to be built on the Green Belt. Whilst some town centre housing is being proposed (but without the affordable housing we badly need), pressure on Green Belt is mounting. We will fight hard to protect our Green Belt and to provide homes that are affordable for local residents in our urban areas.”
Steve is passionate about our heritage – not just important buildings but also our environment and unique and varied landscape.
He says, “Heritage can be a key to keeping a sense of place and identity and where towns lose their identity this often leads directly to their decline. Redhill is place that needs concerted action to ensure this doesn’t happen.”
This year Steve can win
Last year, Steve came a close second. This time he hopes to win. He says, “I hope people in Redhill East will use their votes to help maintain real opposition on the Conservative-dominated Council.”
“One more person sitting on the Conservative benches at the Town Hall won’t make a difference. If elected, I will be an independent-minded councillor standing up for Redhill. I will bring fresh ideas and energy to make the case for change.”
