Council Tax Benefit consultation closes today

Council Tax Benefit is changing.

Councils now have to set up new schemes – with 10% less money from the Government. In addition, the government has restricted the options available to Councils when devising the new arrangements (thus undermining its proclaimed commitment to ‘localism’). This is putting Councils in a difficult position.

Reigate & Banstead Borough Council is consulting on its plans. Today – 23 October – is the deadline for submissions to the consultation, so there is still (just) time to make yours online at

We, the Green Party Group of Councillors, have made a submission, which is available to view here. It is based on our own views and informed by conversations with a number of Redhill East residents who will be affected by the proposed changes.

We were pleased to note that our Council’s draft scheme already includes proposals to minimise the impact of the funding changes on the most vulnerable in our community. However, we believe that more could be done to assist the vulnerable and to ensure that the poorest are not disproportionately affected. The comments in our submission have been made on this basis.
