Green Councillors call for solar panels on Town Hall

Redhill’s Green Councillors introduced a motion at last week’s Council Meeting calling on the Council to install solar panels on the Town Hall and other public buildings.

The motion also called on the Council to set up an Energy Services Company, to facilitate community and commercial investment in solar panels – and enable these benefits to return to community projects locally.

Cllr Jonathan Essex, who moved the motion said, “It’s important that the Council leads the way in the transition to a sustainable future locally. We have already demonstrated this with the commitment to have solar panels on the new Horley leisure centre and Earlswood depot earlier this year. But we can extend this by installing solar panels on high profile public buildings including the Town Hall.”

“This can also give us a good return on investment – far better than investing in the stock market. But we need to act quickly – the ‘Feed In Tariff’ that the Government pays for solar energy goes down in April 2012. If the Council is going to make best use of council tax money we need to fast track programmes to install solar panels.”

Other councils that are installing solar panels on Town Halls and other public buildings, such as schools and social housing, include Leeds, Sheffield, Kirklees, Brighton and Birmingham.
